In my 90 years I’ve seen a lot of changes in Lewiston and Clarkston Valley. The small towns of Lewiston and Clarkston made history and some of these are mentioned in my Hells Canyon story. The Snake River separates Lewiston and Clarkston. A road follows the Snake River to about 25 miles from Clarkston at the mouth of the Grande Ronde River. From there you travel by boat through Washington, Idaho and Oregon to the Hells Canyon Dam. Many authors have written much about Hells Canyon, but it touched so many lives there is more to be told. Through the years I’ve had the good fortune to get acquainted with, “Old Timers” and I never missed the opportunity to encourage them to tell me their stories. Blessed with excellent health and having learned to be a skilled craftsman in the carpenter’s trade, I was able to land jobs on remote ranches around Asotin and Wallowa Counties. Usually I lived with them, worked for them and sometimes I got to work around their ranches with them as I picked up the names of creeks, meadows, canyons, old homestead areas and neighbors. I learned how they worked their livestock and managed their pastureland for the different seasons. Ranchers were hard working honest folks and I developed a lasting friendship with all of them. Now those exciting years are memories that I decided I wanted to share with others. That’s what motivated me to spend several years writing this book. You might call it a history book of the Snake River Country, or a book of stories old timers told me. I believe just about anybody that would pick up this book and start reading it would have a hard time not finishing it. Read more
